🕯 The candle procession festival that marks the beginning of Buddhist Lent is a legendary affair in the northeastern province of Ubon Ratchathani. The fanfare reflects the spirit of local collaboration that makes for a one-of-a-kind procession of intricately carved candles and parades.
This year, the festival will start on August 2. Those wishing to witness the candles in progress can visit Wat Phra That Nong Bua, Wat Chaeng, Wat Burapharam, and Wat Mahawanaram in Muang District. Villagers are now setting up communal camps for that purpose.
And while you’re there, don’t miss a chance to venture out and visit two other cultural villages: the fabric-making community in Khemarat District and the rice-farming community, Khueang Nai District.
