Nora – a distinctly colourful folk dance from the deep south of Thailand – has just been recognised as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage on December 15, 2021, becoming the Kingdom’s third listed UNESCO World Heritage following Khon in 2018 and traditional Thai massage or Nuad Thai in 2019.
Nora or Manora dance is an ultra-elaborate show that combines the art of dancing, singing, and storytelling with its costumes in dramatic colours and patterns, some resembling birds which are a main character of the show. The dance is a cultural treasure perpetuated in the deep south of Thailand including the provinces of Songkhla, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Pattani, Phatthalung, Narathiwat, and Yala.
